A living wall is a garden turned sideways, and gravity notices. Everything that makes a bed of plants easy on the ground — soil that stays put, water that soaks down, roots that spread — has to be re-engineered when the bed is vertical. Get the engineering right and a green wall runs for years with a gardener's attention. Get it wrong and you have a stain on the most visible surface in the house.
Two systems, and they are not the same thing
Most of what gets called a vertical garden is one of two things.
Modular panel systems hold plants in individual trays, pockets or pots clipped to a frame on the wall. Each unit carries its own small volume of substrate. The great advantage is that a plant that fails is a plant you swap, in five minutes, without touching its neighbours. The disadvantage is that small volumes of substrate dry out quickly and the irrigation has to be reliable.
Continuous felt or hydroponic systems run the roots in layers of geotextile against a waterproof backing, fed from a header pipe at the top. They give the seamless look that architects want and they are lighter. They are also less forgiving: a failure is not local, and replanting means cutting into the fabric.
For a private house, panels are usually the sane choice. They are the system a gardener can keep going without a specialist contract.
The four things that decide whether it lives
Water. A vertical garden is on irrigation, permanently. There is no version of this that survives on rainfall and good intentions, because a wall sheds rain rather than absorbing it. Drip line at the top of each row, timer, and — this is the part people skip — a pressure regulator, because the rows at the bottom of a tall wall see very different pressure from the rows at the top.
Drainage. Whatever goes in has to come out somewhere that is not the floor. A gutter at the base, plumbed to a drain, is not optional. Walls that were built without one are identifiable by the mark on the finish below them.
Substrate. Garden soil is the wrong material — too heavy when wet, and it compacts. Vertical systems use light mixes based on coir, bark, perlite or expanded clay, chosen to hold water without holding weight. That mix breaks down over time and gets refreshed, panel by panel, on a cycle of a few years.
Light. The single most common design failure. One wall usually spans several light conditions — bright at the top, deep shade at the bottom, and a hot band where the sun rakes across it in the afternoon. Planting the same species top to bottom guarantees that a third of the wall will struggle.

What goes on a wall in Rio
The tropical Atlantic Forest is unusually generous here, because so much of its understorey is naturally epiphytic — plants that already live on vertical surfaces, gripping trunks and rock faces, taking their water from the air and the runoff. Bromeliads, philodendrons, anthuriums, ferns and peperomias all behave on a wall because a wall is close to what they evolved on.
That is why living walls read as natural in Rio and slightly forced in colder cities. The plants are not being asked to do anything unusual.
Why they end up beside the stair
A stairwell in a stepped house is a tall, narrow, top-lit volume with one blank wall — which is exactly the brief a living wall wants. It also means the garden is seen from three levels at once, from above and below as well as head-on.
The practical bonus is access. A wall beside a stair can be reached without scaffolding, which is the difference between a gardener maintaining it monthly and a contractor quoting for it annually.
What it costs to keep
A gardener with a ladder, once or twice a month: trimming, replacing the handful of plants that have gone over, clearing the gutter, checking that every dripper is actually dripping. An annual look at the pump, the timer and the filter. A substrate refresh every few years.
It is a real standing cost and a modest one. What it is not is zero-maintenance, and any house selling a living wall as zero-maintenance is selling you a future stain.
What to check on a viewing
Look at the bottom two rows. If the wall is being neglected, that is where it shows first, because that is where the water either ends up or never arrives. Look for the drainage gutter and follow it to a drain. Ask where the pump and timer are and whether they are on backup power. Ask who maintains it and how often.
Then put a hand on the substrate. It should be damp, not wet, and not dry. That one touch tells you whether the irrigation is set correctly.
